Often, yes – you can build an AI app for under $10,000 if "app" means one narrow use case taken to a working pilot on your real data, not a finished product with mobile apps, several integrations and compliance sign-off. USD 5,000–10,000 can buy a focused first version that shows whether the idea works; it rarely buys the whole wish list.
If you need more than one use case, or a tool already exists that does the job, the answer changes – and that is what this guide helps you check. It is written by NKKTech Global, an AI engineering company based in Hanoi, Vietnam, so the price points below are ours; other providers price differently.
Key takeaways
- As of October 2026, USD 5,000–10,000 can often buy one narrow AI use case taken to a working pilot on your real data, with one interface and at most one light integration.
- Multi-channel delivery, native iOS and Android apps, several integrations and compliance-heavy domains such as health or lending usually do not fit that budget.
- An off-the-shelf SaaS product or a no-code automation is often the cheaper answer when the problem is common and your process is standard.
- Running costs continue after launch – model usage billed per token, hosting, third-party fees and maintenance – and they scale with use.
- A published case study for a growing US tech company reports a Slack AI operations agent delivered in 6 weeks for USD 25,000, with 70% less status-reporting time.
Can you build an AI app for under $10,000?
The answer depends less on the technology than on how much you ask one budget to do. Language models do the heavy lifting; the engineering goes into connecting them to your data and workflow, and making the result reliable.
What can fit in USD 5,000–10,000:
- One use case, one user group – for example, an assistant that answers questions from your product manuals, a tool that reads incoming invoices into a spreadsheet, or a workflow that drafts replies to customer emails for a person to approve.
- One interface – a simple web app or a chat widget on your existing site.
- Your real data, in a defined slice – a few hundred documents, one inbox, one product line.
- Basic logging and a feedback loop, so you can see what the AI got right and wrong.
- At most one light integration, such as exporting to a spreadsheet or writing to one system with a well-documented API (application programming interface – the way one piece of software talks to another).
What usually doesn't fit:
- Multi-channel delivery – website, WhatsApp, SMS and email all at once.
- Several integrations with a CRM, ERP, helpdesk and payment system, especially older systems with poor APIs.
- Native iOS and Android apps. Building, testing and publishing to both app stores is a project in its own right.
- Compliance-heavy domains such as health, lending, insurance or legal advice, where audit trails, security reviews and specialist sign-off add real work.
- Production scale and support – high availability, monitoring, on-call cover and a long list of edge cases.
If your plan sits mostly in the first list, a pilot under USD 10,000 may be feasible once the data, integration and testing scope are agreed. If it sits in the second, spend the budget proving the core idea first – or on a tool you don't have to build.
What USD 5K, 10K and 20K+ realistically buy
These are possible scopes at our published starting prices as of October 2026, not features included at every price point; the quote depends on the agreed work.
| Budget (USD) | Example of a possible scope | Usually outside this budget | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 5,000 | A tightly scoped pilot of one use case on your real data – one interface and a small data set | Most integrations, multiple user roles, polished design | Testing whether AI can do the core task at all |
| About 10,000 | One use case taken further – a larger data set, a light integration or a test round with real users, if agreed in scope | Several channels, mobile apps, compliance-heavy work, production scale | An AI MVP budget for a first version real users can try |
| 20,000+ | A full build – integrations, user management, monitoring and handover, as agreed in scope; LLM/RAG systems start from 30,000 | Unlimited change requests – scope is still agreed up front | A product or internal system you plan to rely on every day |
For readers in Australia: USD 5,000–10,000 is roughly AUD 7,750–15,500 (indicative, at our reference rate of AUD = USD × 1.55).
It helps to see a real project just above this band. For a growing US tech company, we built a Slack AI operations agent using the Claude API, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG, which makes a model answer from your own documents) and Notion in 6 weeks for USD 25,000; the published case study reports 70% less time spent on status reporting. At USD 25,000, that published build is a cost reference above the AI Pilot range, not an example of what a sub-USD 10,000 pilot includes.
That lower band is where our AI Pilot sits: one use case taken to a working pilot on your real data in 3–4 weeks, for a fixed fee of USD 5,000–15,000, with the code yours to keep and a full build only if it proves its value. The full price list is on our pricing page; for how AI project costs break down more broadly, see AI development cost in 2026, and for non-AI products, MVP development cost in 2026.

When a no-code tool or off-the-shelf SaaS is the better answer
A custom build is not always the right call, even when you can afford it.
Choose an off-the-shelf SaaS product when the problem is common and your process is standard. Meeting transcription, writing help, a basic FAQ bot or the AI features in the CRM or helpdesk you already pay for are well served by existing products, with updates and support included.
Choose a no-code or low-code tool when the job is mostly moving data between apps you already use, with an AI step in the middle – for example, summarizing form submissions and posting them to a team channel. Automation platforms such as Zapier or Make, or a custom GPT inside a ChatGPT business plan, can get you there in days, and a capable freelancer can often set these up for well under a custom-build budget.
Choose a custom build when at least one of these is true:
- The AI has to work on your own data or documents in a way a generic tool can't.
- The workflow is specific to your business and part of what makes you different.
- You need to own the code, control where data goes, or avoid per-seat fees that grow with your team.
- You have already tried a SaaS tool and hit its limits.
A practical approach is to prototype with no-code first. If it proves the value but hits limits, you have a much clearer brief for a custom build. If what you need is a customer-facing chatbot, we compare SaaS builders, freelancers and custom builds in what an AI chatbot costs for a small business.
The running costs that come after launch
The build quote is only part of AI app development cost for a small business. An AI app keeps costing money every month it runs:
- LLM API usage. Many AI apps call a large language model (LLM) from a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, billed per token – the small chunks of text, often parts of words, that models read and write. Cost depends on the model, the length of each request and the number of requests.
- Hosting and storage. A server or serverless setup, a database and, for document search, a vector store – a database that holds text as numbers so it can be searched by meaning.
- Third-party fees. SMS, email sending, messaging platforms, OCR or speech services all carry their own charges.
- Maintenance. Model providers update and retire models, APIs change, and your data drifts. Get a separate maintenance estimate.
- Your team's time. Someone has to review outputs, keep the content current and decide what to improve next.
Measure all of these during the pilot and project them for your expected volume. One design choice helps later: call the model through a single layer in your own code rather than from dozens of places. That makes a provider change easier to implement, but the new model still needs prompt, output-quality and regression testing.
How to scope an AI MVP budget so it holds
Budgets usually break because scope was vague, not because the AI was hard:
- Write the use case as one sentence. "Staff can ask questions about our 300 product manuals and get answers with the source page" is buildable. "An AI assistant for the whole company" is not a scope.
- Define success before you start. Pick one or two measures – minutes saved per task, answer accuracy on 50 test questions, share of tickets resolved – and record today's baseline.
- Bring real data early. Pilots built on demo data tell you little. Agree what is shared, how it is protected and who can access it.
- List what is out of scope. Mobile apps, extra channels, extra integrations and admin dashboards go on a "phase two" list.
- Insist on a fixed scope and a change process. We quote scope changes and get them approved before work on them starts; whoever you hire, ask how they handle changes.
- Plan the decision point. At the end of the pilot you continue, adjust or stop.
Red flags in very cheap quotes. A low price is not a problem in itself – a freelancer with low overheads can deliver excellent work. The warning signs are what is missing:
- A fixed price given before anyone has seen your data or asked about your workflow.
- "A full AI app in two weeks" that includes mobile apps, payments and several integrations.
- No mention of running costs, testing or how accuracy will be measured.
- API keys placed in the front end of the app, where anyone can copy them.
- Accounts, hosting or code held in the provider's name, with no clear handover.
- Open-ended hourly billing with no cap or estimate.
If a quote is cheap and answers these points clearly, it may be a good deal. Founders can also look at our page for startups and our AI automation services.

Frequently asked questions
Is $10,000 enough to build an AI app? For a first version of one narrow use case, often yes. As of October 2026, USD 5,000–10,000 may cover a working pilot on your real data with one interface, once the data, integration and testing scope are agreed. It is usually not enough for multiple channels, native mobile apps, several integrations or compliance-heavy work.
What is a low-cost way to build an AI app for a small business? Start by checking whether an existing SaaS product or a no-code automation already solves the problem; that often costs less than building. If you need your own data, workflow or code ownership, a fixed-fee pilot of one use case lets you test a custom build before committing more.
How much does it cost to run an AI app each month? It depends on usage. Expect LLM API fees that scale with the number and length of requests, hosting and storage, any third-party services and ongoing maintenance. Measure real usage during a pilot before budgeting for scale, because a low-volume internal tool and a busy customer-facing app can differ widely.
